About

Our History

The organisation known today as Open Family Australia (OFA) was informally founded in Melbourne in 1978 by Father Bob Maguire and Brother Alex McDonald and was later established as a charitable organisation and an unincorporated association in 1981. In December 2006, after 28 years of service, Father Bob Maguire retired from Open Family (Australia) to pursue his own Foundation. On 1 December 2011 Open Family Australia merged with like-minded youth organisation Whitelion.

About Whitelion

Whitelion is a not-for-profit organisation that supports young people who are not reaching their full potential due to circumstances out of their control. Whitelion opens doors to opportunities, relationships and community for these young people and help them see a future they can’t see on their own. Through role modelling, mentoring, employment and indigenous programs, outreach services, and through prevention programs run in rural and metropolitan communities, Whitelion gives young people the chance to create the life they want, not what they were given.  For more information about Whitelion, please visit www.whitelion.asn.au.
